Known professionally as Bobby Byrd, Bobby Howard Byrd (August 15, 1934 – September 12, 2007) was an American R&B/soul singer, songwriter, bandleader, talent scout, record producer, and musician who played an integral and significant role in the development of soul and funk music, particularly through his association with James Brown. Byrd began his professional singing career in 1952 as a member of the gospel group the Gospel Starlighters, which later changed its name to the Avons in 1953 and the Five Royals in 1954 before settling on the name the Flames in 1955, which was later changed to The Famous Flames by their agent after Brown joined the group. Byrd was the real creator of The Flames, and he is also the guy who is credited with discovering the legendary James Brown. Posthumously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2012, he was recognised for his contributions as one of the group’s longest-serving members. Byrd was also the winner of the Rhythm and Blues Foundation’s Pioneer Award, which he received in 199Over the course of his career, Byrd helped to inspire the musical ambitions of James Brown, who began his professional career with Byrd.
